Mr Jorion, may I, remind you that it’s the refusal of the European Constitutional Treaty that occurred in 2005 . The Lisbon Treaty was imposed later due to the Sarkozy’s activism, after that the latter had become president of France, and with the complicity of the Socialist Party (during the ratification of that treaty, by the Versailles congress convened for this purpose).
An early version of the ECT that I got at that time (via Internet), was starting with this sentence attributed to Thucydides:
« Our Constitution is called a democracy because the power is in the hands, not of the few but of the many « .

The text found at the previous link, suggests that the European project, was even
less democratic, than the project of the founding fathers of the Great American Republic.
Later I bought the final version of the ECT in a bookstore: This sentence was missing !
For the oligarchy people this was an implicit admission , that they had no intention of establishing a democracy of citizens, but the reign of an aristocracy of merchants over a population of alienated and mindless consumers. Again the Hamiltonians had triumphed.
It is therefore not really strange that although separated by more than 200 years, these two attempts to create a Union of Merchant States, finally are – body and soul – engulfed by an economic crisis, but even more of values and identity.
We live in what should be called « Democratorship of representation ». Representation in the meaning of show, strass and glitter and democratorship not to say dictatorship, this neologism was introduced by someone whose I forgot the name.

doesn’t point anymore at the text that could be read at this address before.
Now you arrive on the site’s welcome page…
